an authentic set of four vintage herman miller eames dss-1 stacking side chairs, originally designed by charles & ray eames in 1955. featuring the iconic molded fiberglass shells upholstered in vibrant orange naugahyde with zinc-plated stacking bases, these were designed specifically for commercial and institutional settings where durability, comfort, and efficient storage were essential.
the dss (dining side stacking) model became one of the most successful variations of the eames shell chair, widely used throughout schools, universities, auditoriums, government buildings, and architectural interiors during the late 1950s and 1960s.
the vibrant orange upholstery paired with the exposed fiberglass shell edges gives these a fantastic mid-century industrial look. they stack beautifully while remaining surprisingly comfortable for everyday dining, office, studio, or commercial use.
all four retain their original herman miller embossed markings underneath the shells.
overall in excellent vintage condition. upholstery presents beautifully with only light age-appropriate wear. fiberglass shells remain solid, frames are structurally excellent, and the zinc stacking bases show only minor cosmetic wear consistent with decades of careful use. an exceptionally clean vintage set.
